  • What happens if I agree to take part?
You will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: Standard and Control. If you are assigned to the Standard group, you will be invited to take part in a study visit on two occasions. The first will be shortly after you agree to take part and the second in six month's time. In between the two visits you will be contacted by the research assistant by phone, to check in on your recovery. Most people are assigned to this group. If you are assigned to the Control group, you will be invited to participate in a study visit six month's after your concussion.
  • What happens at the study visits?
The study visits involve some questionnaires about your injury recovery and a brief battery of tests to evaluate your cognitive recovery, e.g. tests of memory and attention.
  • Why is information being collected about my recovery?
The questionnaires are designed to provide us with information about any symptoms you may be experiencing, your recovery, general health, beliefs about your injury and how you have been coping with symptoms. It is hoped this information will help health services and funders understand more about what might help people recover following concussions.
  • How long are the study visits?
The visits should only take 60-90 minutes.
  • Will participating in the study affect my treatment?
No, the study will not interfere with your treatment and follow up at the concussion clinic. Participation in the study will be in addition to any treatment or follow up from the concussion clinic.
  • Are there any risks involved?
It is anticipated that in taking part in the study, there will be no risks to you. If you are in the Standard group, and attend a study visit within the first 30 days after your injury, you may experience some fatigue. If this happens we can break up the visit, you can take a break or you can complete some of the questionnaires at home in your own time. Otherwise there is no direct cost to you other than your time. You will be provided with a grocery voucher to compensate for your travel costs to get to study visits and for the time you have given.
