Optimizing recovery after concussion

Concussion is a very common issue in New Zealand - more than 30,000 Kiwis sustain a concussion every year.

Previous studies have shown that recovery from concussion can be affected by psychological factors. Anxiety, depression and resilience all can impact how a person recovers from a concussion. In particular, for some people, this can mean symptoms continue to persist, delaying  recovery.

If those treating a person with concussion are unaware of all the things that can affect recovery, this can mean difficulties are overlooked until symptoms become persistent and disabling.

At the end of this study we would like to have a set of guidelines for addressing factors that impact concussion recovery. The guidelines will help those treating people with concussion, allowing them to efficiently identify and manage these factors. Therefore those at risk of a slow recovery will get the help they need earlier rather than later.
